Like many lots on Sullivan’s Island, this was one that provided a humble historic cottage sitting at just under 1,000 SF. The street-to-street lot offered space to build a larger home, and with a growing family, this was the logical next step for these homeowners. Our task was to design a home that balanced private and public spaces by incorporating elements of an open floor plan among the home’s dining and entertaining spaces, with fluidity into the outdoor porches and living room. Conversely, the plan also offers many private enclaves, from sleeping porches to outdoor showers. The new home and original historic cottage work together to create a protected courtyard, with space for a future pool. The formal entry to the home has a gracious staircase spanning 8 feet wide welcoming visitors into this beautiful home.
